Synopsis: Rabindranath Tagore was a Nobel Laureate for Literature (1913) as well as one of India’s greatest poets and the composer of independent India’s national anthem, as well as that of Bangladesh. He wrote successfully in all literary genres, but was first and foremost a poet, publishing more than 50 volumes of poetry. He was a Bengali writer who was born in Calcutta and later traveled around the world. He was knighted in 1915, but gave up his knighthood after the massacre of demonstrators in India in 1919.

This is one of Tagore's most remarkable novels. Originally published in Bengali in 1902, in no other novel is he a better storyteller. In no other novel has he watched the human drama with such gentle and calm irony.

‘Binodini' is a widow who refuses to be condemned to the unjust, inequitable and humiliated existence inflicted by the orthodox Hindu society of the time on widows. Widowhood in the late 19th and early 20th century was considered the supreme curse; and a widow was considered inauspicious, hence looked down upon. Even her presence was supposed to fill one with trepidation. However, Binodini rebels against such a social system and wants to assert her rights and privileges on equal footing with others. She is depicted as an educated and talented young girl but at the same time, she is also aware of the social implications of widow-remarriage.
