THE NEGATIVE, in addition to a complete workable exposure- development plan, covers Visualization, Testing for Optimum Opacity, Exposure Meters, Pre-exposure, Compensating Developers, Effects of Lens Flare, Reciprocity Departure, Darkroom Procedures, and many other subjects related to this phase of photography. Many illustrations, simple diagrams and charts, tables and recommended formulas, and detailed captions all serve to make this book an important source of useful information.
In this volume Ansel Adams intentionally re-evaluated sensitometric terms in a language which the non-scientific student will understand. He staunchly supports the determination of exposure by reading the values of light reflected from the subject, but not mere "average" readings. He shows you how to carefully place the subject brightnesses on the exposure scale of the negative and to develop the negative in relation to this placement. Adams has really re-stated the classic principle of photography, "exposure for the shadows and develop for the highlights," but with revealing and constructive precision.
The author represents thinking in photography. He does not subscribe to the automatic "you press the button and we do the rest" approach which he feels may be right for the snapshooter but not for the serious photographer. He exacts intensity of feeling and accuracy of technique. His approach as presented in THE NEGATIVE has been carefully developed over years of successful teaching and an immense production of creative work, much of which has appeared in national publications.
Adams feels that while the photographer need not be highly trained in sensitometry he should know the response of his sensitive materials to light, not in the exact procedures of the research laboratories but in the endlessly varied conditions of actual practice. He believes that technique has little value in itself; the photographer must be aware of his print before the negative is exposed. Trial-and-error achieves only approximate results. A positive approach, step-by-step controls of exposure and development, and knowledge of the flexibility of the sensitive materials leads to most effective results. All this information will be found in this timely volume. We feel that Adams brings to the serious student of photography a fresh viewpoint on basic technique which will be of inestimable value.
