Synopsis: Twenty-one-year-old, rebellious Chimal wants desperately to escape his native valley-an ancient Aztec civilization said to be forever sealed off from the rest of the world. To escape the cruel gods and priests who rule his world, and the despotic laws they've set up to make life unbearable, if not frighteningly transient.
Coatlicue the Dreadful walks the river at night in search of taboo-breakers. One glance at her twin serpent heads instantly kills the beholder, sending him straight to the underworld.
Citlallatonac, the fearful first priest, performs delicate operations on anyone believed to be possessed by the gods- sacrificial operations, that is. To round things out, Chimal, having rebelled against the priest, is now being held re- sponsible for his sudden death. A way out of this hateful valley must be found at any cost.
But the world Chimal escapes to outside, at once futuristic and backward, reverential and hostile, promises a nightmare he never bargained for...
