Title: The Lively Lady

Author: Kenneth Roberts

Format: Hardcover

Publisher: Doubleday, Doran and Co 1943

Edition: Reprint

Size: 5.5 X 7.25 X 1.25 * 368 pages

Synopsis: The Lively Lady is a novel about the War of 1812 and tells the story of U.S. sea captain Richard Nason as he is captured by the British and sent to Dartmoor Prison.

A SAGA of fighting, suffering, enterprise and romance, and a fitting successor to the great historical novel, ARUNDEL.
IN THE LIVELY LADY, as in ARUNDEL, Roberts has brought to life another Homeric yet long neglected episode in the history of America. In ARUNDEL it was Benedict Arnold's dramatic march on Quebec: in THE LIVELY LADY it is the intrepidity of American privateersmen in the War of 1812 and the bitter sufferings of thousands of American seamen within the mist-shrouded walls of that British purgatory, Dartmoor Prison.

Against this background is laid the calculated daring and indomitable persistence of Richard Nason, son of the Phoebe and Steven Nason of ARUNDEL, captain of a merchant brig at twenty. He is forced into war against his will; and into the violently twisted pattern of his life come a host of vivid characters: the mismated Sir Arthur and Lady Ransome; King Dick, the giant negro ruler of Prison Number Four; Captain Thomas Shortland cruel and violent tempered...

Kenneth Roberts (1885-1957) wrote historical fiction, winning the Pulitzer Prize Special Citation in 1957 for his novels focusing on early American history.
