Synopsis: From the Jacket: Several fine reservoir engineering texts are out on the market. Some of them are for students; others are for the practicing engineer. However, none of them covers the whole scope of reservoir engineering as simply or concisely as E. H. Timmerman's Practical Reservoir Engineering. The two-volume set covers the entire field of reservoir engineering, from conversion factors and mathematical techniques to calculating skin factors. The best of all published literature is abstracted in the volumes, and hundreds of illustrations show how the methods and techniques work.

Volume one of the series covers how to obtain the best possible description of fluid and reservoir characteristics. Timmerman covers equation symbols, methods for solving problems, data sources, natural and man-made recovery processes, and the general organization of the industry. He continues with a chapter on determining the best values for rock parameters, with subsections on core analysis and logging devices, determining depth of burial, 1/porosity, saturation, permeability, and wettability. The third chapter treats oil and gas behavior, covering bubble point, adjusting PVT data, density, volume, formation factor, compressibility, viscosity, and the m(p) curve. Chapter four discusses how to determine various engineering parameters, including subsurface temperatures, shut-in pressure, flowing bottom-hole pressures, and water cut. The final section deals with performance and has discussions on well testing, flow time, buildup curves, straight lines, parameters, productivity index, and skin.

The material is complete, concise, and easy to understand. Students and practicing engineers alike will be able to comprehend the methods presented in Practical Reservoir Engineering-the best compendium of reservoir-engineering information on the market.

E. H. TIMMERMAN has now retired from active service with the industry after serving the past ten years with H. K. van Poollen and Assoc. and the previous 33 years with Shell Oil Co. He earned a BS degree in chemical engineering and an MS degree in petroleum engineering from the University of Texas. Following graduation, he worked in locations throughout the area east of the Rockies for Shell. He was exposed to world- wide operations at yearly meetings and during an assignment in Holland. In that capacity, he analyzed field and well performance and consolidated the studies of other specialists to obtain an overall understanding of the operation. He also made forecasts and economic calculations and prepared reports and recommendations for final consideration and approval by management.

Mr. Timmerman is an active member of the Society of Petroleum Engineers and is a registered petroleum engineer in Colorado, Oklahoma, and Texas. He has written numerous articles for SPE publications, the Oil & Gas Journal, and Petroleum Engineer International. In addition, he has worked with industry groups presenting testimony before the Federal Power Commission. Mr. Timmerman has discussed gas technology and oil-industry economics in many parts of the U.S. as a distinguished lecturer for the Society of Petroleum Engineers.
