Synopsis: From the Jacket: This book is concerned with the preservation of our natural environment in heavily populated areas. It includes twelve contributions from experts in their fields plus commentaries upon their respective points of view. There is an introductory essay by the editor and a summary by Lewis Mumford.
The articles are grouped into three sections entitled "Land," "Air," and "Water" and treat the many problems affecting each particular theme. In Section I, the articles include: "The Place of Nature in the City of Man"; "The Green Areas of Megalopolis"; "Ecology and Management of the Rural and the Suburban Landscape"; "Recreation Habits and Values: Implications for Landscape Quality"; and "Acquiring and Protecting Land." Section II contains articles on: "Metropolitan Air Layers and Pollution"; "The Relationship between Plants and Atmosphere"; and "Radioactivity and Fallout: The Model Pollution." The final section discusses: "Educational, Recreational, and Scientific Aspects of the Aquatic Community"; "Our Freshwater Environment"; "The Ecology of Wetlands in Urban Areas"; and "Botanical Gardens and Horizons in Algal Research."
The variety of approaches offered toward the solutions of these problems reflects the diverse perspectives of scientists, administrators, educators, and businessmen. There is, however, a unifying concern - that of our survival - that transcends the different views and styles and lends an urgent note to the discussions.
