Synopsis: From the Jacket: Just about every climatologist agrees that the earth is due for a significant change in climate, but they disagree about what kind of change it will be-and when it will Occur.
Are we going to freeze or fry? Are we headed for another ice age, or is it going to get warmer? A slight change in world average temperature-of only two degrees or so would change our lives dramatically. The onset of an ice age would cause mass starvation for a substantial number of the world's people. And just a slight warming period would start melting the polar ice caps and raise the sea level by about 260 feet, submerging such coastal cities as New York, London, and Tokyo.
In this absorbing introduction to a complex problem, Roy A. Gallant examines what causes changes in climate-including such natural forces as sunspots, cosmic dust clouds, and variations in the earth's orbit and magnetic field . . . as well as man-made factors like industrial heat and pollution, Freon from spray cans (which may destroy Earth's protective layer of ozone), and the "greenhouse effect" of the carbon dioxide in our atmosphere.
The author discusses the wide-reaching economic, social, and political effects of short-term climate changes in the world today. We also learn how paleoclimatologists are discovering how our climate began and how it has evolved over time. And we discover what has been predicted for the next 50 years-and the next 50,000 years!
What if our climate does take a turn for the worse? There have been proposals for taming hurricanes, and for large-scale engineering schemes that would melt the polar ice caps . . . for building a giant dam across the Strait of Gibraltar, or even creating a mammoth new "African Sea." But as we learn, tinkering with world climate can create more problems than it solves!
Earth's Changing Climate is an important book about a growing problem-its causes and why it can no longer be ignored.
Roy A. Gallant is the author of more than 40 science books, including Fires in the Sky: The Birth and Death of Stars; Beyond Earth: The Search for Extraterrestrial Life; How Life Began: Creation Versus Evolution; The Constellations: How They Came to Be; and Memory: How It Works and How to Improve It, all published by Four Winds Press. Since 1970 he has been a member of the faculty of The American Museum-Hayden Planetarium in New York City, where he has taught astronomy. A Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society, London, and former editor-in- chief of the Natural History Press, he served as science education specialist for the University of Illinois's Astronomy Program and is Director of the Southworth Planetarium, University of Southern Maine.
"Thoroughgoing yet readable, Gallant's exploration of climate-what it has been, where it might be going-could well be the beginner's basic resource; it is the most comprehensive treatment so far." -ALA Booklist
