Synopsis: From the Jacket: OHIO'S MOST FAMOUS and interesting citizens- those who lived or were born in the state-are the subjects of this new volume by a veteran columnist and well- known Ohio citizen herself. Grace Goulder, whose weekly column in the Cleveland Plain Dealer has appeared continuously for twenty-one years, now contributes a welcome addition to Ohio literature and lore with this handsome book. Drawing on her vast personal contact over the years with persons closely identified with the national and international personalities about whom she writes, Miss Goulder provides seventeen engrossing chapters about the Ohio years of many familiar names of American history and letters.

Here are fascinating accounts of the great abolitionist John Brown and the two wives who bore him a total of twenty children; of Woodrow Wilson and his youthful love affair with his first cousin; of Paul Laurence Dunbar, the Negro poet, who was "discovered" by William Dean Howells, another Ohioan; of Katharine Wright and how she forsook her famous brother, Orville. Stories about Thomas Edison, Warren G. Harding, Annie Oakley, Marshall Field, Mark Twain, and others are also included in this treasury of Ohioana. Ohio Scenes and Citizens contains illuminating glimpses into Ohio's folklore and history and uncovers much fascinating and heretofore little-known detail about many famous and distinguished Ohioans.

GRACE GOULDER whose famous column "Ohio Scenes and Citizens" (from which this book draws its title) has appeared in the Cleveland Plain Dealer for more than twenty years, was born in Cleveland into a family which had settled early in Ohio; she was brought up on the history and lore of her native state. A graduate of Vassar College, Miss Goulder has been the recipient of the coveted Ohio Governor's Award and has been cited by many Ohio organizations and historical societies for her contributions to the culture and education of Ohio citizens. Miss Goulder frequently lectures to clubs and societies and is the author of This Is Ohio. She now resides with her husband, Robert Izant, in Hudson, Ohio.
