Title: Taps for Private Tussie Thomas Benton

Author: Jesse Stuart Illustrated by Thomas Benton

Format: Hardcover

Publisher: E.P. Dutton & Co. 1943

Size: 5.75 X 8.5 * 303 pages

Synopsis: From the Jacket: As DOROTHY CANFIELD says of this book: "Is there anything more rejoicing to the eye of man than the sight-whether it be in garden, field, orchard or at a writer's work-table-- of something alive, growing and growing through the years, till it comes to maturity and stands laden with fine fruit? In TAPS FOR PRIVATE TUSSIE Jesse Stuart gives the readers this special joy . . . and shows himself a master workman in this enchanting story, which may well be one of our American classics.

"The characteristic of a literary classic is that it can be read on so many diverse planes of enjoyment by so many different kinds of people. This tale... can be taken as a brimming mountain spring from almost any page of which one can dip up a draught of hilarious fun or lovely sensuous folk-poetry.

"These are two of the most beautiful gifts any author can put into the hands of his readers. They are far more rare than the usual story-interest in finding out what is going to happen on the next page. Yet never was there a book the pages of which the reader turned more eagerly to see what in the world can be going to happen next. The sequence of events is so rapid, so rich in poetry and comedy, and the tale unfolded is so outrageously unexpected, yet so convincing, that your interest is held as in any adventure story."

"YOUNG JESSE STUART, the Kentucky mountain boy who used to scratch sonnets on leaves when he came to the end of a furrow while plowing, must have been born under a literary star. Everything he writes about bears the unmistakable stamp of a true creative gift, of a talent as natural and untrammeled as that of Robert Burns."- Cue Magazine.

Mr. Stuart's work will be found today in the country's outstanding magazines - The Atlantic Monthly, The Yale Review, Scribner's, Harper's, Story Magazine, Esquire, Collier's, etc. He is represented in both the O. Henry Anthologies, edited by Harry Hansen, and in the Best Short Stories, selected by Edward J. O'Brien. In 1938 he received a Guggenheim Fellowship and spent a year in Europe. In October, 1939, he married Naomi Deane Norris and they now have a little daughter, Jessica Jane.

THOMAS BENTON

Perhaps no living American artist is better fitted to bring Jesse Stuart's characters to life. In his own way Thomas Benton is as uniquely American in his art as Stuart is in his writing. Considered one of America's leading artists, his canvasses hang in the leading museums throughout the country.

A native of Missouri, Thomas Benton studied at the Chicago Art Institute and at the Academie Julien in Paris. He began his career as a professional painter in 1912, and was director of the department of painting at the Kansas City Art Institute from 1935 to 1941. He has created murals for the New School for Social Research, The Whitney Museum of American Art, the Missouri State Capitol at Jefferson City, and for numerous other public places.
