Synopsis: From the Jacket: On January 20, 1961, Robert Frost recited his poem, "The Gift Outright," at the inauguration of President John F. Kennedy. This occasion marked the first time in the history of our country that a poet has been so honored; it also marked a high point in Frost's long and distinguished career.
No literary figure alive today is more closely identified than Robert Frost with all that is strong in our heritage. Whether he is describing a Vermont snowstorm or the beauty of a single flower, he conveys a fresh and biting power, an intensity of feeling, an unpretentious wisdom - and a remarkable gift for making what is personal to him personal to all.
Some of the new verses gathered in these pages evoke the fields and farms of New England; others speak of great deeds and universal truths in language that is as forthright and uncompromising as Frost himself. "The Draft Horse," "Pod of the Milkweed," "A Cabin in the Clearing," "America Is Hard to See" - such poems as these are stirring examples of Frost's ability to see greatness in the familiar and simplicity in the grandiose.
A four-time Pulitzer-prize winner, Frost has been honored by literary societies, colleges, and universities throughout the world. The United States Senate adopted an unprecedented resolution of felicitation on his seventy-fifth birthday; and in 1958 he was appointed Consultant in Poetry to the Library of Congress, in recognition not only of his poetic talents but of his boundless interest in the history of men and ideas.
Several years ago, at the age of eighty- three, Frost still hesitated to call himself a poet, insisting "it's for the world to say whether you're a poet or not." The world will welcome IN THE CLEARING, his first collection of new poems in fifteen years.
