Synopsis: TO THE TEACHER: The importance of woodwork in our American economy is increasing. However, the idea of woodworking for industry is not adequately presented in many schools. Although courses in woodworking have been taught for seventy years in schools, they have been limited to a large extent to hand and machine woodworking. Today there are more students enrolled in woodworking courses than at any other time in history; but there is a need for improvement of these courses to bring them up to date and in line with present practices in industry.
While wood is a very old material that has been used as long as man has been on this earth, only in recent years has it developed into a material with thousands of uses. This is particularly true of the many man- made wood products now utilized in furniture and building construction.
WOODWORKING FOR INDUSTRY is designed primarily to fill the need for a modern, advanced woodworking course in senior high schools. However, because of its comprehensiveness, this book prove useful also may in vocational and technical schools, and at the college level. The textbook presents current information on materials, tools, and processes. Technological developments in products, tools, and building techniques are given great emphasis. This book acquaints students with the sources, uses, and limitations of wood products. It describes the way in which man has applied modern technology to this basic, natural material to mold it to his many needs.
Most important, this book truly represents the broad field of woodworking. It gives equal emphasis to the building of important construction and cabinetmaking. It represents the work of all major occupational groups. This book gives the student a basic knowledge of wood- working that will be useful to him regardless of the occupational choice he makes in later life. It will stimulate him to think about choosing an occupation directly or indirectly related to the field of woodworking, in which he will find rewarding opportunities and a chance to make a worthwhile contribution to our economy. Today, the chance of a student's securing employment in a woodworking craft is better than ever before. However, a great majority of these opportunities lie in the areas of carpentry and building construction which have not been given adequate attention in woodworking classes.
The subject matter of this textbook was selected after careful and extensive research. The author made detailed studies of governmentally and commercially published materials related to woodworking. He also examined advanced courses of study for schools in several cities and states. WOODWORKING FOR INDUSTRY is based on the results of this research. The important things have been emphasized and described in clear, interesting fashion. The author has been guided to a large extent by research done by the Forest Products Laboratory of Madison, Wisconsin. All of the units relating to wood materials have been checked for technical accuracy by this organization.
The units have been organized around the basic areas of instruction. The book is designed in such a way that any or all of the units may be selected for instructional purposes. The author has attempted to use the essential and desirable technical vocabulary and to explain the new terms as they are used. A glossary of important terms is included.
The reading level of this book is appropriate for the age level of the students for which it is designed. The content is presented in a manner that should appeal to advanced high school and technical school students. Illustrations form a large portion of the instructional content. There are drawings and photographs representing actual working conditions.
Many units in this textbook will be useful in connection with manipulative activities; others provide necessary depth by giving students a clear understanding of the importance of woodworking in our economic life.
Great pains have been taken to make sure that the material included in the book is technically accurate. The author visited furniture manufacturing concerns, home-building organizations, and on-the-job craftsmen to check on techniques and practices. While not every method of completing each process can be described, because of space limitations and the differences of opinion among craftsmen on many points, the ones described are accurate and technically correct.
