Synopsis: From the Jacket: In an age when all America seems to be traveling down the road to a bland uniformity of styles and commercialized, plastic sameness, there still remains one last group of true romantics anchored to their convictions, beliefs and folkways-- the good old boys, the white Southerners with their mystique of fast cars, moonshine, country music, stock-car racing and Southern machismo. In this marvelous and eloquent book, Paul Hemphill, the author of The Nashville Sound: Bright Lights and Country Music, celebrates the last of a dying breed-and his own childhood and upbringing. He describes his initiation into the company of men in Class D Baseball on a hot summer night in Graceville, Florida, the mystique of sports, the trials and tribulations of down-home Southern politics (in the person of Lester Maddox), the world of evangelist preachers, roller derby promoters and country music stalwarts that is peculiarly Southern, the folk heroes of an embattled civilization. The Good Old Boys is a tour de force by one of the most exciting and original writers to emerge from the South in recent years, who, with a voice that is peculiarly and triumphantly his own, gives a brilliant account of a world-or maybe a view of the world-summed up by the writer's own father: "There's days I'll be sitting on the yard downtown, nothing to do but drink bourbon and chase it with a six-pack, and out on the expressway I'll hear some old boy in a rig whistle and get another gear, and it gets to me..."
