Synopsis: From the Jacket: Seldom has any country been beset by so many pressing and serious problems as South Africa, and during recent months much attention has been focussed on current trends and events there. So that he might gain first-hand information, we commissioned H. Maclear Bate to visit the country during 1955, and he has now recorded his views without prejudice for us in this book. The overwhelming majority of Africans over Europeans, apartheid (the segregation of black and white races), republicanism and the infiltration of the Indian into all parts of Africa are a few of the provocative subjects he discusses.
While he was in Cape Town he talked with the Union's Prime Minister, Johannes Strydom, who granted him one of the longest exclusive interviews he has ever given to the Press, and gave a frank explanation of the policy his National Party has adopted since it came to power. He outlined the difficulties which South Africa has to face and discussed the drastic measures which have been introduced to meet the effect of the spreading, elementary, political consciousness among the nine million Africans upon whose labour the continued prosperity of this rich country depends.
H. Maclear Bate maintains that too much dangerous and mischievous criticism has been levelled against the South African Government by people who are ignorant of the state of affairs existing in the Union today. He believes that most South Africans, whatever their European origin, approve the Government's actions and in SOUTH AFRICA WITHOUT PREJUDICE, he has attempted to present the facts clearly and to disclose much that for political and other reasons has hitherto been concealed.
