Synopsis: Dr. Dick Warboys, of Rockets in Ursa Major, is back in this new thriller, along with three extraterrestrial friends, Betelgeuse, Rigel and Alcyone. The four find themselves on an enormously long space trip. As always, the Yela is the enemy. The Yela can destroy the. Earth by wrapping a blanket of hydrogen around the atmosphere, and then pressing a little of the hydrogen into the atmosphere itself.
This is the setting for a whacking good space tale, full of excitement, and with the intriguing scientific details that are so important a part of science fiction by the Hoyles, father and son. There are fascinating bits on food and sensation in distant space. "'Three thousand beautiful calories. A highly balanced diet for a growing space man,' Alcyone said, handing me a few dried up leaves." "In total blackness, I was now without any real sensation, for the space suit prevented me from gaining any sensitive awareness of my surroundings. I hung suspended, weightless, without sight, smell or sound, and very nearly without touch. Under such conditions a man quickly becomes a vegetable."
There are vast variations of heat and cold. There are wondrous sights to see and utter, ultimate blackness. There are periods when the computer fails completely, when everything goes wrong. There is a vastly exciting period of being towed at incredible speed by the beautiful but sinister golden Yela spaceship. And there is a final arrival back on Earth. Or is it really Earth? Dick Warboys knows, but he does not tell his friends.
