This book has been written to fill the need for a one-volume scientific discussion of the major types of environmental pollution-air, water, noise, solid waste, thermal, and radiation pollution-and their effects on man and on the environment.
The book has evolved from a one-quarter course on The Physics and Chemistry of Pollution taught in the physics department at Iowa State University. It could serve as a text for a one-semester or longer course or as a supplement to any of a wide variety of courses dealing with environmental concerns.
It is hoped that the book will prove useful to students, as part of their general education or as an early step toward an environmental career; to teachers, as an aid in developing formal environmental curricula or in incorporating discussions of environmental problems in existing courses; and to educated laymen, as a scientific introduction to pollution and its control.
Because the author's training has been in the physical sciences, there is greater emphasis on physical and chemical principles than on biological and ecological principles. It should be recognized, however, that it is the health and environmental effects of pollution that are of most concern to mankind.
Historical and current statistics have been included in order to show the progress that has been made in the past in overcoming some types of pollution and yet to demonstrate the magnitude of existing problems. The discussion centers largely on the American and British experiences, but an attempt has been made to show that pollution is a global concern.
In order to permit meaningful comparisons of data, the quantitative data presented in this book have been converted into SI (metric) units from a wide variety of different units. For example, all volume units are cubic meters or its multiples or submultiples, rather than cubic feet, gallons, acre- feet, barrels, cubic miles, and other specialized units. Appendix A lists conversion factors between the SI and other units.
Appendix B includes lists of books and periodicals dealing with environmental matters and of addresses of sources of environmental information. The references at the end of each chapter are intended to provide a more specialized bibliography.
